HomeColumbia Med Spa Services → Cosmelan Hyperpigmentation Treatment in Columbia, Maryland

Hyperpigmentation can affect your confidence in many ways, whether from sun exposure, hormonal changes, acne, or genetic predisposition.

Although very common, hyperpigmentation often manifests as dark spots or uneven skin tone, making it difficult to leave the house without a full face of makeup (or concealer). Thankfully, modern cosmetology has made it possible to tackle hyperpigmentation effectively, regardless of the cause.

At Elegance Aesthetics, we offer the Cosmelan Hyperpigmentation Treatment to help patients tackle and eliminate dark spots and uneven skin tone, revealing a rejuvenated glow underneath.

Cosmelan is perfect for all skin types and individual concerns, making it an excellent alternative to more aggressive treatments.

If you struggle with hyperpigmentation concerns and have yet to find a treatment that works, you might be the ideal candidate for our gentle and effective Cosmelan treatment.

There’s only one way to find out—learn more below!

Types of Hyperpigmentation

It’s important to note that hyperpigmentation comes in many forms and can occur for several reasons. Below are some of the most common types of hyperpigmentation.

Melasma: Melasma is a type of discoloration that manifests as brown or gray patches on the skin. It can occur for several reasons, including sun exposure, genetic predisposition, hormonal changes during pregnancy, and contraceptive use.

Sunspots: Also known as age spots or solar lentigines, sun spots are usually caused by prolonged sun exposure. They appear as small, darkened areas on the skin, giving them their widely used name.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH): This type of hyperpigmentation usually manifests in dark spots or local discoloration. PIH results from the skin’s healing process due to injury, acne, or general inflammation.

Freckles: Although freckles are often seen as standard or even attractive, they still fall under the category of hyperpigmentation. Some individuals with prominent freckles may seek depigmentation treatments to lighten them for a more even skin tone.

Uneven complexion: Not all skin types are the same, and some individuals are naturally predisposed to hyperpigmentation, which appears as a generally uneven skin tone.

What is the Cosmelan Treatment?

The Cosmelan Peel is a contemporary depigmentation treatment that addresses all hyperpigmentation concerns. It works by regulating melanin production, the pigment that gives our skin its color. In addition to dealing with existing discoloration and dark spots, it prevents new hyperpigmentation.

The treatment itself consists of two phases: on-site peel application and at-home maintenance:

Phase 1: An experienced practitioner applies the Cosmelan 1 mask at the facility to target pigmentation.

Phase 2: The mask is removed, and the patient is provided with Cosmelan 2 cream and other aftercare products to maintain and improve results.

Initial Consultation

Your treatment timeline begins with an initial consultation. You’ll meet with a trained expert to evaluate your skin concerns, skin texture and type, and relevant medical history to determine whether the Cosmelan Treatment is right for you.

Our expert will also provide essential information, including treatment details, preparation recommendations, and what to expect.

Once the consultation is complete, our team will help you schedule a date and time that best suits your calendar.

The Treatment

Step 1: Preparation

Location: Facility

Upon arrival, your skin will be thoroughly and gently cleansed to remove any impurities and dead skin cells before the treatment.

Step 2: Cosmelan 1 Application

Location: Facility

Your practitioner will apply the Cosmelan 1 mask to the affected areas. This mask contains several active ingredients that address pigmentation. You will be asked to leave the mask on for 8-12 hours, after which you will remove it at home. Your practitioner will provide instructions on how to do this.

Step 3: Cosmelan 1 Removal

Location: Home

Following the instructions, you’ll remove the mask at home using a mild cleanser after 8-12 hours.

Step 4: Maintenance

Location: Home

Phase 2 of the Cosmelan Peel involves applying Cosmelan 2 cream and other Cosmelan products as part of your daily skincare regimen. You’ll receive comprehensive maintenance instructions to ensure the best results and prevent hyperpigmentation from reoccurring.

Step 5: Follow-Up Appointments

Location: Facility

We recommend patients attend routine follow-up visits to track progress and make any necessary adjustments to their skincare regimen.

Treatment Aftercare

In addition to at-home maintenance, your practitioner will advise you to follow the aftercare steps listed below to ensure you get the most out of your treatment.

  1. Stay away from direct sunlight and regularly apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Exposure to UV rays can stimulate skin darkening and diminish the treatment’s effects.
  2. Use mild, non-irritating skincare products as instructed by your Elegance Aesthetics esthetician. Until your skin has fully recovered, avoid harsh exfoliators and active ingredients like retinoids and acids.
  3. Use appropriate moisturizers to ensure your skin stays well-hydrated, aid in healing, and maintain a healthy skin barrier.
  4. Resist the urge to pick or scratch your skin, as this can cause irritation and potential scarring.
  5. To prolong and amplify the results, continue using the Cosmelan 2 cream and other recommended products as part of your daily skincare routine.
